The College of Literature and Journalism at Sichuan University boasts a long and distinguished history, traceable to the Jinjiang Academy (founded in 1704) and the Zunjing Academy (founded in 1875), which were precursors of Sichuan University(SCU). When SCU was established as the Sichuan Chinese-Western School in 1896, Chinese Language and Literature constituted one of its foundational disciplines. The college has been steered by eminent academic figures, including deans such as Xiang Chu and Zhu Guangqian, and its Department of Chinese Language and Literature has been chaired by renowned scholars like Xie Wuliang, Liu Dajie, Pan Zhonggui, and Yang Mingzhao.

During the nationwide restructuring of academic departments in the 1950s, the college was restructured into a department. In 1979, its Journalism program was approved, ranking  among the first three journalism programs established in China after the Reform and Opening-up policy. In 1994 the College of Liberal Arts was reinstated. In 1998, the Department of Chinese Language and Literature of the former College of Liberal Arts merged with the former College of Journalism of SCU to form the present College of Literature and Journalism. In 2013, the college was selected into the inaugural cohort of ten journalism schools under the "Joint Development by Ministry and University" initiative, a collaboration between the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, the Ministry of Education, and local publicity departments, leading to the establishment of the College of Journalism at SCU. In 2022, it was designated as one of the first five national units for the co-development of Publishing disciplines, resulting in the founding of the School of Publishing at SCU.

The college stands as one of SCU's most robust institutions for the humanities education and scholarly research. With the aim of developing a high-level research-oriented college and cultivate top-tier talents, it has established a comprehensive educational system encompassing undergraduate, master's, doctoral, and postdoctoral programs. The college comprises three primary first-level disciplines: Chinese Language and Literature, Journalism and Communication, and Art Theory. Among these, Chinese Language and Literature is one of China's first national key first-level disciplines (one of only five nationwide and the sole such discipline in the humanities at SCU). In 2017, the discipline cluster "Chinese Language and Literature and the Global Dissemination of Chinese Culture", anchored by the aforementioned two first-level disciplines, was included among the 12 prioritized first-class discipline clusters for development at SCU. In the fifth round of discipline evaluation conducted by the Ministry of Education, Chinese Language and Literature received an A+ rating, and Journalism and Communication a B+ rating.

The college houses 14 teaching and research sections / professional orientations: Literary Theory; Classical Chinese Philology; Classical Chinese Literature; Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature; Comparative Literature and World Literature; Linguistics and Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language; Chinese Linguistics and Philology; Journalism; Radio and Television Studies; Advertising and Semiotics; Editing and Publishing Studies; Communication and New Media; Ethnic Minority Literature and Literary Anthropology; and Art Theory, Film & Television Media.
